Loop has been in operation as a collective of professional artists since December 1999. It is one of the founding galleries of the Queen West Gallery District. loop relocated to its present space on Dundas at Dovercourt in September 2009 and we havent looked back since. New initiatives and programming are developing with incredible momentum, its a very exciting time to be part of loop!
Loop Gallery is a collective comprised of approximately 39 members, varying in age.
Some are at the early stages of their career, while others have had
a lot of exhibition experience. Some of the artists are also employed
in the cultural sector as set painters, carpenters, and designers
or as art instructors. Our common goal is to increase our profiles
in the Toronto art scene.
Our clientele consists of artists, art patrons, dealers, and collectors.
An increased number of people who live uptown and out-of-town enjoy
spending their Saturdays gallery hopping and boutique shopping. We are currently
located at Dundas and Dovercourt.
Members receive one two-person exhibition each term. Each member is
responsible for the mounting of their own show. This includes the
hanging and striking of artwork, gallery clean-up, and costs of invitation,
opening reception, and mailing. All costs could be split in half for
2-person exhibitions. The gallery's Administrative Director will oversee all of
the above, cooperating in the invite design, and working with the
artists. It is expected that the exhibiting artists and the Administrative Director
will coordinate these tasks. The exhibiting artists are expected to
sit at the gallery for each Sunday of their show. The gallery's Administrative Director
will be at the gallery the remainder of the time.
Members will be asked to contribute 2 - 4 hours of volunteer time each month
to help with some maintenance and gallery improvement as they may occur.
The short and long-term success of the gallery is dependent on cooperation between all of the members.
Artists will be asked to make a one-term commitment to this project.
Each gallery term is 18 months. The collective is viewed as a platform
for artists' professional development but it is understood that members
might pursue other avenues as well, such as public, artist-run, or
commercial galleries.
The membership fee in the new term is still to be determined, however it will be in the range of $90-115/month.
Interested artists should prepare a package that contains the following:
- A cover letter indicating why you wish to join and how you
hope to participate in our collective. Membership involves a volunteer commitment of 2 - 4 hours per month.
- An artists statement that discusses the direction of your current
body of work or the ideas behind your art practice in general.
- An artists Curriculum Vitae, outlining group and solo exhibitions,
publications, reviews, and related experience.
- A CD containing 10 to 20 jpgs (at least 180 dpi, 6 inches in width) which demonstrate your artistic
practice or define the direction your artwork is currently following. Film/video artists can submit 2-3 short videos.

FAQ
What's the Monthly Membership Fee?
The monthly membership fee for the upcoming schedule is still under review by the Executive Committee. It will likely be between $91 and $105/month.
What Are the Additional Fees Associated with My Show?
The gallery will request $10 for supplies and $12.50 for a Special Occasion Permit associated with your exhibition. Food and beverages at your reception will be at you own cost.
What Marketing Materials Am I Responsible For?
You'll have to cover the costs of printing postcards ($180 for 1000), stamps (for up to 500 recipients), photocopies and envelopes for mailing, window lettering ($30). Since each show is a two-person show, costs for these mandatory materials are often shared between the two exhibitors.
What about Additional Marketing Materials?
These will be administered by Loop Administrative Staff at your request, and at your cost, such as Akimbo broadcast ($85), Slate listing (approx. $50, when divided by the number of artists in each issue), ads in magazines, etc.
Are Out of Town Artists Eligible?
Members of Loop gallery do not have to be from Toronto; we currently have artists from all over Ontario and Canada. Loop also accepts International artists. Any artists that are not from the GTA must actively determine how they can fulfill their volunteer hours.
How Would I Fulfill the Volunteer Hour Component of Membership?
By participating in committee meetings and doing 2-4 hours of maintenance/admin work each month. Each member signs up for a volunteer task that they maintain for the duration of the term. For out of town artists, it is likely that you can fulfill your volunteer hours via the internet and during any times you may be in Toronto. If you cannot attend the various meetings and events that we often require volunteers at, you will have to find other ways of contributing time to the gallery that works for you. Be sure to mention some of your ideas for how you can fulfill the volunteer commitment in your cover letter with your submission package.
Will I have to Monitor the Gallery?
You'll have to monitor your own exhibits on Sundays during your exhibition. Sunday shifts, which run from 1-4pm, are required to be fulfilled by one of the two artists showing; exhibitions usually run for 4 weekends, so there would be 4 Sundays that are divided up between the two exhibiting members.
